Integrated care for all types of stroke

A stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted by a blood clot or when a blood vessel bursts. The lack of oxygen kills brain cells, often causing symptoms such as weakness or numbness on one side of the body, trouble walking or talking, or vision changes. Immediate access to advanced treatment gives you the best chance of recovery.

At NeuroCare Center Goshen Physicians, we take a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to treating patients who have experienced a stroke. Our board certified neurologists and neurology nurse practitioners work together throughout your care – from initial treatment to rehabilitation.

Our team is dedicated to the health of the northern Indiana and southern Michigan community – we want to help prevent a stroke before you’re at risk. Talk to your primary care provider about a heart screening. If you don’t have a primary care provider, call (574) 537-5000 for a referral.

Signs of a stroke

When a stroke starts, you have a narrow window of time to get the help you need. Lost time can result in more brain damage. That’s why it’s important to know stroke symptoms:

  • Numbness, weakness or paralysis in the face, arm or leg
  • Severe, sudden headache
  • Trouble walking or loss of coordination
  • Difficulty breathing, seeing or speaking
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of consciousness

If someone near you is showing these signs of a stroke, call 911.

What causes stroke?

Hemorrhagic stroke is usually caused by a ruptured aneurysm. The more common ischemic stroke and TIA are usually caused by atherosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries. Blood clots can block blood flow to the brain and cause a stroke.

You may be at a higher risk for stroke if you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or atrial fibrillation (AFib).
